RETHINK

Written and Directed by Andrew Muir

Graduation is a day full of celebration and joy. The cloaks, the hats, the bubbles and the dreams all laid bare for the world to see. In July 2020, that class of graduating students had little to celebrate. There were no cloaks, no hats, possibly a bubble but whatever dreams there were, they were soon cut short when the world shut down.

RETHINK is a play about the aftermath of that sunny July in 2020, when six graduates from a performing arts course on the South Coast of England, are encouraged to think again, in the wake of theatre closures and lack of opportunity. What choice do they have? According to a Government-backed advertising campaign their next job could be in cyber, they just don’t know it yet. So, there’s the choice. It’s as easy as that. Isn’t it?

REVIEWS

★★★★★ “Some stand out moments include Hugo Lucas Rowe’s monologue, a beautiful piece of writing about his disability and the attitude of others, performed with such raw emotion that it moved me to tears. And when Jack Dunford talks about the impact of furlough and the desperation of the pandemic on his mental health, it is gut wrenching. Sam Jenkinson is a comic character at first, constantly questioning whether his hero De Niro ever had to do such trivial exercises, but his performance becomes equally heart-breaking. Georgina Pacifico and Georgia Bates also bring a brilliant mix of humour and emotion to the stage, while Gabrielle Holloway’s vocal performance is a spine-tingling moment. They are a talented bunch. And their talent deserves to be seen.” Everything Theatre

★★★1/2 “Entertaining and Inspiring… Andrew Muir’s direction plays to the ensemble’s strength, and with surreal moments such as an unexpected guttural cry, a reverberating drum beat, or a jarring sound effect, he cleverly plays with theatrical form. Through monologues we learn about the performers, and here the play and the cast shine.” The Reviews Hub

FAQ

  • Ideas for the play were created during 4 days of workshops, both before lockdown and then as we emerged from it, with the ARDENT8 ensemble. The group felt frustrated, angry, saddened and let down at having graduated into a world where any hopes of pursuing a career in the theatre had been dashed. It was created in response to the highly criticised government campaign that encouraged those working in the arts to retrain.

  • 75 minutes without an interval.

  • There is a lot of humour in it. We also think it’s very powerful and moving.

  • We’d recommend 14+. There’s swearing and some adult themes.

  • Both Ardent and the venue follow current government guidelines. At present, there are no restrictions on attending indoor live events.

Although the venue does not require social distancing or mask wearing to be compulsory, we recommend the following:

Please consider taking a lateral flow test before you set you. They are free and can be ordered here.

If you are unwell or think you may have symptoms, please stay home and contact the theatre to let them know you can’t come. Contact them also if symptoms occur after you have seen the show.

There will be sanitiser at the theatre entrance before you go in to take your seat and when you leave.

Please use your own discretion whether to wear a mask when moving around the cafe/bar and in the theatre.

Everyone involved in the production will be taking regular lateral flow tests and are staying within a few minutes walk of the theatre as a ‘bubble.’ Should any of the actors fall ill or test positive we have understudies on hand to step in. If several cast members test positive and it’s no longer possible to continue the production we will let you know and issue a refund.
